Bound to style in quarter leather, red leather lettering piece, gilt; marbled paper boards. A near fine copy. Translated from the High-Dutch original. Backhoff traveled from Moscow to China via Siberia in 1654. Wagener traveled throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and America. This account is taken from his diary. He was in China in 1653. The account is quite short. .

Hardcover. 1st Edition stated, Authors first book and the precursor to his 1968 Pulitzer prize winning book “Confessions of Nat Turner”. A VG+ book in a VG+ dust jacket. Jacket has small stain on front cover (just above the title) and some edgewear to the jacket, jacket currently with removable archival protection. Also included is the signed Franklin Library Edition. One of the sixty books in the series of Author Signed Leather Limited Editions published by Franklin Library from 1977 through to 1982. Beautifully bound in dark brown leather with gilt letter and design in 22kt gold and printed on archival paper with gilt edges. The end sheets are of moire silk fabric with a red silk marker sewn in, still in its original position. The book is in mint condition, unread with tight binding. Some offsetting of ink from an ownership inscription. Very good copy. This is a treatise on the diseases of children and their physical education. It contains sixteen chapters. The work treats nutrition, care of the newborn and infant, wet-nursing, breastfeeding, weaning and the foundling hospital. One section details twenty-six health issues or diseases of infants (including sores, limping, bowed legs, teething, redness, coughing, etc.). There are two issues of this book from 1794 and 1796. We have the 1796 issue, which has a longer pagination and wherein the publisher’s name is not given - noting that H.A. Printed in color throughout with the letters of the alphabet and corresponding color-printed engraved vignettes. Six pages do not have illustrations and are printed with vocabulary words organized into ten lessons (incorrectly numbered two through eleven rather than one through ten). Minor dust soiling and some toning inside. Spine coming apart but holding. A very good, bright copy of a fragile item that is scarce in commerce. Each letter is accompanied by a woodcut, a few vocabulary words, and two lines of verse. For example, the letter Y is paired with the vocabulary words "Youth, Yew, and Yonder" and the lines "Youth lies beneath a yew, / That within the churchyard grew." The lessons require students to read lists of simple words aloud. The words rhyme or otherwise share sounds between them, so students could practice identifying and pronouncing… Leer más
