Description: Dust jacket design by Patricia Saville. Includes two short sections of black and white plates. A study of the San Francisco Vigilantes of 1856 and Jude Edward McGowan. John Myers Myers reveals the bag of totalitarian tricks unleashed by the vigilantes, including secret courts, dog soldiers with unlimited powers of search and seizure, and even a picture of an eye (foreshadowing Orwell's Nineteen-Eight-Four) to let the populace know they were under observation. Rear gutter code ''H14'' indicates a printing date of April, 1966.
