From jacket: "(The author) spent several years living and travelling in more than 20 African countries... He tells what it is like trying to cajole an eccentric chieftain in the Cameroons into parting with a rare carved bedstead; and how he sat with Congolese blacksmiths counting 2,000 arrowheads for an American businessman. He discovered an awe-inspiring mask of 'Queeni Elizabethi Wa Waingilesa' made by the the primate Mkonde tribe of Portuguese East Africa; he met the Fon of Bum, who called his herd of miniature cattle to him by name, and fed them with Dad's Cookies; he has seen examples of the ancient and highly developed and and architecture of Ethiopia in monasteries to which the only access was by climbing up a rope..."
