In this volume (first published by W. Kimber in 1980 as 'SAS Operation Oman'), he describes the regiment's role in what is regarded as the most successful counter-insurgency campaign ever fought - the Dhofar War of 1969-76. Despite its success, the SAS involvement was kept secret from the British public for many years and is still little known. This book sets the record straight and is still studied at the British Army Staff College as a text-book on counter-insurgency. The aim was not to kill the enemy, if possible, but to persuade him to see the error of his ways and turn him against his former comrades - something achieved with remarkable skill and professionalism.
