[From back cover] SATRICUM is the name of an ancient town which stood some 60 kms south of Rome. Roman historians mention its name more than once, mainly because of its stubborn resistance to Roman expansionism, but also for its famous temple dedicated to the goddess Mater Matuta.Excavations at Satricum were first undertaken at the end of the last century, but broken off after two years. Short campaigns were undertaken in 1907-1910, but since 1977 Dutch archaeologists have worked at Satricum every year, without interruption, either excavating within the urban area of Satricum or studying and evaluating the finds. In these 21 years much interesting knowledge has been gathered. Nine major and numerous smaller scientific publications have seen the light and others are in preparation. This book is meant to introduce the reader-archaeologist or interested layman aliketo the site of Satricum, its history and archaeology, and to the latest results of the Dutchcampaigns.
