At the start of the novel the reader finds him at a club with the wife of one of his colleagues, leading them to spend the night together.This novel won the Author's Club First Novel Award, and was adapted into a film in 1960, and a play starring Ian McKellen in 1964. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. Very light bumping to the tail of the spine. Small mark to the rear board. Faint spots to the fore edge and endpapers. A little edge wear to the dust wrapper, with a chip to the tail of the spine. Minor marks to the wraps. Tide mark to the reverse of the dust wrapper. It was adapted by Sillitoe into a 1960 film starring Albert Finney, directed by Karel Reisz, and in 1964 was adapted by David Brett as a play for the Nottingham Playhouse, with Ian McKellen playing one of his first leading roles..

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
