Sobre este artículo

London: Printed for Lockyer Davis, 1753. First edition in English. 1 vols. Original blue boards with calf spine and corners, red leather spine label. Boards a little rubbed, otherwise w very attractive copy, uncut. First edition in English. 1 vols. Among the cast of characters referred to in the "Key" in this delicious collection of satirical essays are the King, the Dauphin, Mde de Pompadour, Voltaire, various lords and ladies, clerics, etc. Here a sample: "When Pallades [the Dauphin] walks, comes into a Room, bows or speaks, you see the very Picture of his Tutor Callidesmus [Bishop of Mirepoix]: a lumpish Look, an awkward Politeness, an arrogant and supercilious Manner, low-lived trivial Discourse ... "

According to Barbier, there is some evidence that a certain "Abbé Desplaces" had a hand in commissioning Génard to write the work, which enjoyed something of a succès de scandale. The excitement must have quickly crossed the channel, as this English translation appeared in the same year as the first French edition, for which the printer Laroche was arrested; and several London editions quickly followed. ESTC T109128; Barbier II: 13 (French ed.)
