1880. LANIER, Sidney. The Science of English Verse. Original green cloth. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1880. First edition. BAL 11259, Binder's Variant D, Binding Variant D. Lanier has corrected the error on p. 164 "anacrusis [See p. 229, note]." Presentation inscription from the author on front endpaper, "Mrs. S.B. Bird, from her friend, the author. Baltimore, May 1880." Sarah Bird, originally from Georgia, had been a friend of the poets Paul Hamilton Hayne and Henry Timrod. After she moved to Baltimore James R. Randall and Sidney Lanier were frequent visitors in her home. Lanier wrote of her: "She hath been my constant and true friend, and I shall love her-I know thou wilt also-all my life." Some wear to spine ends and corners, else very good or better.
