AS RELEVANT TODAY AS 60 YEARS AGO, PHYSICIST C.P. SNOW'S EXPOSÉ OF THE MISUSE OF SCIENTIFIC ABILITY BY GOVERNMENT, SIGNED BY AUTHOR.

8 inches tall hardcover, gray cloth binding, black cloth spine with gilt title, vi, 88 pp, inscribed "To Florence Otis/ from/ CP Snow/ April 9/70" on half-title. Scattered light pencil marginal notes, very good in good price-clipped dust jacket with closed tears to top edge.

CHARLES PERCY SNOW (1905 - 1980) started his professional life as a physicist and was a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, from 1930 to 1950. During World War II he was in charge of selecting scientific personnel for war research in Great Britain. From 1945 to 1960 he was a Service Commissioner, and since 1947 he was a Director of the English Electric Company. At the time of delivering the Godkin Lectures at Harvard in 1960 he was Regents Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. LAID IN: editorial in Nature, The International Journal of Science, 19 March 2020, titled COVID-19: what science advisers must do now, "Sixty-odd years ago, the chemist-writer and civil servant Charles Percy Snow revealed in his book Science and Government the shocking extent to which science advice to governments during the Second World War had lacked evidence."
