Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1968. This book describes the scientific expedition sent by Isabella II to the part of the New World still ruled by Spain. Seven naturalists and a photographer travelled to the Argentine Pampas, the Andes Mountains, the Atacama Desert, Patagonia, Panama, California and many other places searching for specimens and artifacts for museums in Spain. Robert Miller was the first non-Spanish scholar to have access to these records, basing his entire book on letters, journals, and official records.
