Sobre este artículo
Venezia, Lorenzo Baseggio [Laurentium Basilium], 1728. Hardcover. .. 12mo (180 x 100mm). Pp. (xiv), 454. Plus engraved frontispiece and 9 folding plates only, each with engraved impressions of medals and coins, one plate separated from the stub and loosely inserted. Engraved illustration to title-page. Woodcut illustrated tail-pieces. Notes in neat contemporary hand to first blank, a signature, old stamp to title-page, bookplate, few first leaves lightly dampmarked at lower corner. HARDCOVER, handsomely bound in half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Lacks a plate, else a very good, handsome copy. ~ First Italian edition. Translated from the French by Selvaggi Canturani. Incomplete, contains frontispiece and 9 folding plates. Louis Jobert's (1637-1719) acclaimed manual, "La science des medailles, pour l'instruction de ceux qui commencent à s'appliquer à la connoissance des medaillea antiques & modernes", first appeared in Paris in 1692/3 (Lucas). It went through several editions, and was translated into the main European languages. Lipsius p. 202. Cf. Brunet III, 549 (listing the French editions of 1715 & 1739). The handsome frontispiece is by now well known for its view of two collectors in their coin cabinet, the spaciousness and luxury of which attests to the craze for medal collecting. [Provenance:] from the library of the Royal College of Physicians in London, with its handsome, elaborately engraved armorial bookplate. I-2 OUT
