Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper: "To dear Victoria Baillie / In recollection of Sunday Nov: 5. 1876 / from Victoria R / Balmoral Nov: 5. 1876." Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Prince Albert acquired the private Scottish estate known as Balmoral Castle in 1847. Upon the passing of her beloved husband in 1861, Victoria entered a deep state of mourning and hid from the public in several royal estates including Balmoral. The royal family would return to the estate for annual visits in early summer and autumn; a tradition that continued through the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
