Slight cracking to hinges, with exposed netting, pages remain attached. Pages are lightly tanned throughout. Tears to edge of last few pages, text remains unaffected. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Unclipped jacket has heavy edgewear with areas of loss, heavy tears, chips, and creasing. Light tanning and water staining to spine and edges. White staining to front panel. Wear marks overall.

This is the autobiography of Haywood Patterson who was one of the accused in the famous Scottsboro rape case of the 1931. "On March 25, 1931, nine Negro boys, unemployed and looking for work, were riding on a train that was passing through a Southern town. They got into a fight with some white hobos and knocked them off the train. To get even, the whites reported that the negro kids had raped two prostitutes whom they knew to be riding on the same freight train. Thus began the Scottsboro case." Patterson tells his story of Alabama prison farms and jails and his ultmate escape from a term of life in prison.

The jacket is protected by a removable Gaylord clear-plastic sleeve. NOT price clipped ($3.00). NOT a library discard. Previous owner's tiny address label. Newspaper clipping ["Scottsboro Case Defendant Freed," Lansing State Journal, July 14, 1950) tipped to the front pastedown endpaper. The clipping is hidden beneath the jacket's front inner flap. First printing, with "First Edition" so stated, and no other impressions indicated. Pages are clean, crisp and unmarked. Autobiographical account of Black American Haywood Patterson's arrest for rape, trial, harrowing impisonment at an Alabama prison farm and in Alabama jails, jungle law of survival, sex life of the prisoners, failed escape attempts, and thrilling details of his ultimately successful escape.
