This story of one of the greatest American scouts is filled with the thrilling adventures of men in an unbroken wilderness where life was in continual danger from the prowling beasts and hostile red men. North Carolina and Kentucky in 1773 -- a colorful, splendid expanse of forest. Among the rugged heroes of that time, Daniel Boone stands out for his courage, reverence, honesty, unselfishness, his simplicity and yet his shrewdness as shown in his dealing with the Indians.

The foundation of this story is taken in large part from Boone's own diary, but the record of the adventures, the narrow escapes and the rescues is told in modern language so as to be more easily read and appreciated by the boys of today. There is romance and tragedy in the life of Daniel Boone. He believed that he was called to be the pathfinder for the new nation in America. He is a figure of legend -- one of the greatest of those who were making history rather than recording what they did.
