According to his obituary, "at his best, Zorach, through simplification of form and monumentality, dealt with life's poetry, love, childhood, and the beauty of living things...His involvement with the State of Maine was a continuous one. Both the animals in many of his pieces and the stone to carve them were often found on his Robinhood farm. His gifts to the City of Bath including the statue 'The Spirit of the Sea,' which stands in the city park, and to various museums in the state are well known. Bowdoin and Bates conferred honorary degrees on him. His wife, Marguerite, and his daughter, Dahlov Ipcar, both of Robinhood, are painters with broad reputations.
