Sobre este artículo

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd. 1949-1954.. FIRST EDITIONS of vols. 2-6; new, revised, and reset edition* of vol. 1. 6 vols. 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, decorative patterned endpapers, top edges dyed red, in the unclipped dust-jackets. Maps and diagrams throughout, some folding. Dust-jackets with some light uneven fading and faint signs of wear to extremities, contents clean, generally an excellent set in well-preserve jackets. Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War, and a major factor in Churchill being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. *Note to the New Edition: "The opportunity of a reprint enables various errors in detail to be corrected. I am grateful to those who have drawn attention to these and offered suggestions for improvement. I must express my appreciation also of the generous reception given to the work, and extend my cordial thanks to the many person who have written to me concerning it. For this new issue the publishers have found it possible to reset the entire book in a larger type, a changed which it is hoped will be found agreeable to all readers. Winston S. Churchill, Chartwell, June 14, 1949". According to Woods the "second edition of this volume was entirely reset in a type-size two points larger for its publication on 7 November 1949. All succeeding volumes were set in the larger size", effectively making this volume uniform with the succeeding 5 volumes. Woods p.119

Sinopsis

Dealing with war on a giant scale, THE GRAND ALLIANCE focuses on events as Britain, after fighting a desperate battle alone, was joined in the struggle against the enemy by Soviet Russia and the United Sates. Hitler's invasion of Russia brought to an end a period of almost exactly a year during which Britain and her Empire had stood alone. Six months later, the United States, attacked by Japan, joined the war and the Grand Alliance was born. It was a momentous turn in the course of the war and Sir Winston Churchill noted, 'United we could subdue everybody else in the world. Many disasters, immeasurable cost and tribulation lay ahead, but there was no more doubt about the end.'

Reseñas

El Oct 16 2010, ElectricEel dijo:
There is no doubt that Winston Churchill was a great stylist, and if you can only read one history of World War II, you should probably read this one. On the other hand, although I don't know if there are any outright lies in this book, he does deem occasionally filter the truth to suit his political convenience.
