The Shulchan Aruch, sometimes dubbed in English as the Code of Jewish Law, is the most widely consulted of the various legal codes in Judaism. It was authored in Safed (today in Israel) by Yosef Karo (1488 – 1575) in 1563 and is modeled after the Arba’ah Turim, composed some two centuries earlier by Rabbi Jacob ben Asher (c. 1270 – 1340). Together with its commentaries, the Shulchan Aruch is the most widely accepted compilation of halakha, or Jewish law, ever written.
