Iain Crichton Smith's first collection of poems in English was published by Macdonald in 1955, and in the quarter-century since then his voice has become one of the most individual in contemporary Scottish writing. His prolific output has included novels, stories and plays, in addition to poems, and he writes in both English and Gaelic. His Gaelic background gives him strong roots in an important part of the Scottish past, and, in turn, it gives also a wider perspective to his naturally alert view of the present world. His first Selected Poems appeared in 1970, so the time is ripe for a new gathering. This new selection, chosen, arranged and edited by Robin Fulton, draws on all of his published English poetry and includes too a fair sample of his Gaelic verse, translated by himself. The selection has been made from twelve separate collections, and there are also poems first published in magazines (notably Lines Review) but previously uncollected. .
