No dust jacket, this is John Gardner's first book, preceding his The Resurrection by four years, it is essentially a text book written while he was an English professor at Chico State College, Signed by Gardner, it includes John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums, pages 248-258, text from The Long Valley, Goldstone & Payne B124, not recorded by Morrow, also includes Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, and others. Very good plus.

Introduction and notes by Thomas Wright, The Introduction is of bibliographical importance as it sketches the history of the early editions of Malory: Caxton (one complete copy; one incomplete); de Worde (two editions, one copy of each known); Copland; East; and finally the edition of 1634. Each volume with the engraved circular bookplate of Emily Morris Gallatin on the front pastedowns. The simple signature of Arthur Lewis, 1949, on each of the front free endpapers. And on the front free endpaper of volume 1 a nearly full page inscription dated 2018. Only volume 1 has been fully opened; the remaining volumes are partially unopened. Aside from the inscription and signatures, these volumes are in very good condition showing only traces of wear at the corners, edges and spine tips. This is a curious edition. Brown and buff cloth half binding stamped with dark brown and gilt lettering, tan endpapers. Edition limited to three hundred, this copy numbered 197. Laid in are printed four-page brochure for the Lloyd Reynolds exhibit "A Life of Forms in Art" at the Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, 2011, as well as a one-page prospectus for the exhibition catalog. During his last year the well-known Portland author, calligrapher and teacher wrote this history of the alphabet in the form of personal letters to his friend William Gunderson. Printed by John Laursen at Press-22. Preserved in a clear archival sleeve.
