Illustrated Editions Company, New York, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Cloth). Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Mahlon Blaine. list of illustrations. The text is illustrated with five full-page illustrations and quarter-page illustration at the beginning of the text all created by Mahlon Blaine. 1/4 cream-coloured textured cloth covered back strip with gilt coloured illustration and decoration to the back strip, along with a red inserts, and within those inserts gilt coloured titles. 3/4 blue coloured textured cloth covered boards with gilt and red coloured illustration to the front panel. Pink coloured tint to the text block edges. First published in 1768, and it is the sentimental reminiscences of the narrator through France and Italy – mainly of an amorous nature. The book is showing age and use. Softening rubbing and some fraying of back strip edges with bumping and fraying of the book corners – the underlying board is visible. Rubbing to the book edges and panels with quite heavy flecking of the book panels – elderly the rear. The cream coloured back strip has become quite grubby and shows a few handling marks and the back strip itself white summed and faded. Some marks to the text block edges with offset tanning and foxing of the end pages and the first few pages in last few pages. Internally the book is quite clean and bright with the very odd foxing spot. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down, and, it has ghosted on to the free front end page. There is an erosion marks to the top right-hand corner of the free front end page. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Sinopsis
A Sentimental Journey is a novel without a plot, a journey without a destination. It records the adventures of the amiable Parson Yorick, as he sets off on his travels through France and Italy, relishing his encounters with all manner of men and women-particularly the pretty ones. Sterne's tale rapidly moves away from the narrative of travel to become a series of dramatic sketches, ironic incidents, philosophical musings, reminiscences, and anecdotes; sharp wit is mixed with gaiety, irony with tender feeling. With A Sentimental Journey , as well as his masterpiece, Tristram Shandy , Sterne forged a truly original style and established himself as the first of the stream-of-consciousness writers. This new Penguin Classics edition features an introduction that discusses the novel in relation to Sterne's other writing and places it within the context of "sentimental" literature. Also included are a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and full explanatory notes.
