The Serpent replaced the Manchester University Magazine in February 1917 and derived its name from the snake which appeared in the arms of the University of Manchester. Paper shortages during the latter days of the First World War ensured that the journal appeared less frequently in its early issues, but after 1918, it was issued monthly during the academic session.
