Half-vellum with marbled covered boards. 13 × 7cm, xxiv + 514pp. Richard Johnson's The Seven Champions of Christendom (first published in 1596) tells the stories of St George of England, St Denis of France, St James of Spain, St Anthony of Italy, St Andrew of Scotland, St Patrick of Ireland, and St David of Wales. The book is illustrated with a frontispiece showing St George looking over "The Lions of the Wilderness after destroying the Eunuch reposing on the lap of Sabra", and an engraved vignette to the title page of "The three sons of St George contending with the Griffin". This copy has the embossed stamp of bookseller and publisher of "Luigi Piale, Bookseller, No 1,2,3, Piazza di Spagna, Rome" to the head of the contents page. Condition: Fair. A reading copy only. The binding is heavily worn and rubbed, and the pages are foxed, The book remains in good, readable condition, but one or two pages are working loose.
