A landmark study of the marital histories of some 14,000 Chinese women, undertaken over a period of twenty years, the study examines the question of whether or not early contact during childhood negates the chance of sexual attraction later in life. Due to the cultural custom of some southern Chinese families of adopting and raising the future wives of their sons in infancy, the Chinese provided a unique milieu in which to study the author's premise (Wolf assumes, correctly, that early contact does inhibit later sexual attraction). The study is particularly significant in light of the once widely believed theory first expressed by Freud, that early sexuality was almost universally incestuous and that incest laws were promulgated as society's response to this phenomenon.
