Fading to board edges and in particular the spine. Missing front free endpaper. 3" closed tear to interior edge of title page. Textblock toned. Light gouging to top of text block. Foredge of text block bumped. Foxing to first two pages as well as rear endpapers. Top fore-edge of text block bumped. Upper hinge starting, lower hinge cracked at p214. Charles S. Johnson was the first African American president of Fisk University. Inscribed by author on title page, "To Howard Kester, with esteem, Charles S. Johnson." Howard Kester was a Southern preacher, organizer and union activist. Kester noted on front endpaper "Return to Howard Kester Black Mountain, N.C." Boards protected in a semi-rigid mylar sleeve.
