First Edition, First Printing. 8vo; 21 cm.; 8.25 inches tall; 188 pages.. The back of the dust jacket describes the main character John Shaft: "Who the hell does he think he is, this blackface Bogart who says the Revolution is a new way to chase chicks, the Mafia is made of meatballs and life is going to screw you if you don't get to it first? Who? John Shaft, private investigator, a man so cool his blood runs ice."
The novel, written in 1970, became an iconic and oft referenced and recreated movie in 1971. Shaft was one of the first blaxploitation films, and also one of the most popular, which "marked a turning point for this type of film, and spawned a number of sequels and knockoffs.
