Black and white photographic frontispiece, showing John Gielgud in the title role of Hamlet. Within the text as they are another 16 black-and-white photographs of theatres and actors who played in some Shakespearean plays. Green coloured boards with black titles to the backstrip. Bumping and discolouration to the backstrip edges and a rubbing to the book corners. Browning to the top book edge and there is a " crease" to the lower edge of the rear panel. Light fading to the lower edge of the rear panel. Fading to the top edge of the book. Light age toning of the endpapers and internal text. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Black-and-white photographic dustwrapper (wraparound), showing the Komisarjevsky production of The Comedy of Errors, with green and white titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing and slight chipping to the dustwrapper edges and backstrip edges. There is a 0.25 " tear to the top left-hand corner of the front dustwrapper panel. A 0.5 "split to the lower edge of the rear fold over crease. Fading to the backstrip. In this book the author, over a period of 62 years, has seen over 500 productions of Shakespeare's plays. He is an amateur, a member of the audience and not a professional attached to theatre production in any way. He kept a journal of his impressions of the plays and of the evolving Shakespearean play from 1890 to 1952. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
