Rachel Crothers [1878-1958] was an American playwright and theatre director whose well-crafted plays often dealt with feminist themes. Theatre historians generally regard her as the most successful and prolific dramatist writing in the first half of the twentieth century. She broke new ground by directing, staging and casting most of her own plays. She was known for opening doors for other women, including giving Katharine Cornell, Tallulah Bankhead and Francine Larrimore their first Broadway roles. She was also an activist and philanthropist, establishing organizations such as the United Theatre Relief Fund, to improve the welfare of her colleagues. She was given the Chi Omega sorority national achievement award, a gold medal award for "an American woman of notable accomplishment in the professions, public affairs, art, letters, business and finance, or education."
