It was a colorful, dramatic, blundering, and confused fights in which the most important commanders of the war participated (Grant, Sherman, Johnston, Beauregard, Bragg, and Forrest). Grant wrote that the battle of Shiloh was "perhaps less understood or more persistently misunderstood" than any other Civil War battle. This is a comprehensive treatment of the battle.
