Sobre este artículo

Israel: Massada Press Ltd, 1969. Very Rare Volume. Some Aspects of Jewish Scholarship of the Nineteenth Century Contains Part 1: the Scholarly Contribution of Shlomo Yehudah Leib Rapoport (Shir), 1790-1867 and Part 2: The Polemics of Shir. 8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 214 pages including index. Black and white frontispiece on glossy stock. From jacket: "The introduction describes Shir's scholarly and ideological uniqueness in both Hebrew literature and the wide field of Jewish historiography. Following it, the author traces, in the first part, the scholarly growth and contribution of Shir, from his early literary publications in the first volumes of Bikkurei ha'Ittim, through his critical monographs of the late (eighteen) twenties and early thirties, to his later activity in the forties, fifties and sixties. Subsequently, three questions are asked and answered: 1) Why did Shir concentrate on the study of the medieval period in Jewish history? 2) Did his religious attitude affect in any way his scholarly work? 3) Did he change his views and attitudes in the later period of his life? In the second part the author describes the polemic of Shir with his contemporaries, the Galician maskilim, the "Spectators," Hayyouth, S.D. Luzzatto, Jost, Furst, Geiger and Frankel. Taken in toto these polemics offer insights not only into the character and through of Shir himself, but, more significantly, into some aspects of Jewish scholarship of the nineteenth century and problems that were in the center of its attention and interest." Title page and Table of Contents pages appear to be printed at a slight angle (publishing defect.) Area of light soil to bottom corner of inside cover and fep. Bumped back corners. Jacket appears to be slightly sunned on spine, missing small chip from bottom back corner, edgewear, minor chipping to top of spine and small puncture near spine seam. Dealer Direct Payment Only.
