Publisher's advertisement for travel works by Karla Capka on back dust jacket section. The third volume in the series Knihy Dobré Pohody. Ma-Fa was the pseudonym of the Czech journalist and author Marie Fantová (1893-1963). Book is in Near Fine- Condition: boards are slightly curved; clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Very Good- Condition: rubbed; 0.5-cm. tear from upper edge of front section, without loss; minor loss at head of spine; very lightly soiled. Very scarce.

Third edition.William Lempriere, traveller and medical writer, was third son of Thomas Lemprière of Jersey. He entered the army medical service when young, and by 1789 was attached to the garrison of Gibraltar. In the September of that year Sidi Mahommed, emperor of Morocco, sent a message to General O'Hara, the commandant at Gibraltar, asking that an English doctor might be sent to attend his son, Muley Absolom, who was suffering from cataract. Lemprière accepted the commission, and left Gibraltar on 14 Sept. 1789; on 28 Oct. he reached Tarudant, where he attended the prince with great success. His only rewards, however, were 'a gold watch, an indifferent horse, and a few hard dollars.' Hardcover. Good. Gustave Dore engraved illustrations, AEG, copy with bright gilt decorations and title on front cover and spine. All pages edged in gilt. Repaired damage to 50% spine along gutter visible but tight, small cloth removal at top of spine and repaired inner gutters that are less than attractive but this accounts for lowered price else G+ or better, 523pps. Rest of book is impeccable the obvious flaws do exist and account for the price reduction. Beautifully illustrated with lithographs throughout book. Sold with all faults!
