Original red fabric boards showing fading near lower front hinge. Handmade paper with deckled edges. Original red cloth, top edge gilt, gilded title on spine. Signed by author and inscribed: "To _____ With kindest regards and best wishes of the author. May happiness be your lot and joy your steps attend. George Hazen Shinn, St Helens, Oregon July 8, 1941." Recto of half-title states it is No. 47 of "250 copies privately printed for the author." However, Clark & Brunet state several dozen other copies were printed and bound, and the author received 100 copies for private distribution ---- so this is No. 47 of original 320 copies [Clark & Brunet, 258]. A Near fine copy of this work, save pp. 29 & 53 have off-setting where a news article was laid in and discoloration near joint on cover. 183 pp. Octavo, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches tall. Received a good review in American Anthropologist, though the author made no pretense as a scholar, but rather as a first hand informer. Work is based on his interactions with the Shoshone Indians. 93 other copies are mostly in library special collections.

Fine minus, unread book that is lightly crimped at top of spine, in a Fine minus jacket with a very light scratch and slight rubbing to back panel. This was a cheaply produced book and is fairly scarce in such nice condition. This novel was originally thought to be Carter’s autobiographically story of being an orphan raised by his Cherokee Indian grandparents. Carter claimed to be part Cherokee and was thought to be a cowboy drifter. However, he fooled his publisher and most of his readers with his fictional account. Carter was actually living a double life and had been an avid segregationist and a speech writer for Alabama Governor George Wallace. The 1992 story, The Real Education of Little Tree (published in Texas Monthly), covers the history of Carter (who was actually Asa Earl Carter) and his fake autobiography – a fascinating story that is stranger than fiction.
