DAMON in Constantinople, Turkey, 1929, related letters about Webb and his wife Beatrice's trip to the Near East and arriving back in England at Passfield Corner and his wife's book "My Apprenticeship" being sent, (1) dated April 28 [19]29, one sheet front and back, 5-1/2" x 8", handwritten signed/ALS, about 100 words, letterhead of Hotel M. Tokatlian, Istanbul, "Mr. Bernard Berenson kindly gave me the enclosed card of [?] to you for my wife and myself…We should greatly value the opportunity of making your acquaintance, and of learning something of the position here, economic and political; as well as of meeting any of those concerned with Robert College…We have only just arrived from Athens…"; (2) dated 23.5.[19]29, Chelsea, London, UK letterhead with handwritten note above "address till 20 June/29" with handwritten underneath "Permanent address: Passfield Corner, Liphook, Hampshire", 3-1/4 pages (of 4 pages as folded), 4-1/4" x 7" with black border on first page, handwritten letter/ALS, about 260 words, "We reached home on Whit Sunday (19 May)…The three days quiet and restful hospitality that we owed to you and Professor Moore [dean Robert College] really saved the situation; and we have the most pleasant recollections of those mornings and evenings above the Bosphorus…The immediate purpose of this letter is twofold…First to remind Professor Moore of our London address [so he can] get into communication as soon as he reaches London…Secondly to advise you of the dispatch to you of my wife's book My Apprenticeship [underlined]…souvenir of our visit…and to read for a description of Victorian England…When you next visit England…let us know in advance…", with two 1929 N. Y. Times Magazine clipped articles, (i) Oct. 6, "Two Prophets of Socialism Now in British Peerage" about Sidney and Beatrice Webb, (ii) Dec. 8, "The Fabians Conquer Britain" about the Fabian Society; signatures authenticated by seller with lifetime guarantee; NOTES: SIDNEY WEBB, 1859-1947, British socialist, economist, and reformer…co-founder of the London School of Economics…in 1884 along with George Bernard Shaw, joined the Fabian Society three months after it was formed…wrote the original, pro-nationalization Clause IV for the British Labor Party…influential figure in intellectual and political affairs in Britain in the first part of the 20th century for his writings and position in Parliament…accused of being blind to the tyranny of Stalin (wikipedia); THERON J. DAMON, 1883-1975, in the early 1900s, residing in Constantinople, worked in teaching, journalism, and as a courier for the American Embassy during the time of WWI…later was executive secretary of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Levant…after 1926 became an regional agent for an American oil company…opened a Middle Eastern antiquities shop in New York City, but struggled with this with the onset of the Great Depression (online sources) /// CONDITION: well preserved, negligible wear, handwriting readable.
