William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's cousin was born in Michigan but spent most of his life in California farming, where, according to one obituary, he "drove ox teams into the wilderness in search of buffalo meat, and experienced many pioneer hardships and adventures"; during the Civil War he joined the 8th Eighth Kansas Volunteer Infantry, Company H -- a regiment that traveled farther east than any Kansas unit and saw action at Chickamauga and Chattanooga and participated in the Atlanta campaign; Cody was captured at Chickamauga and experienced prison life at both Libby and Andersonville. Large, bold old age signature and affiliation ("Co. H 8 Kan. Vol. / Inf.") on a buff heavy stock 5½" X 3" postal card, n.p., n.d. [postal cancellation on verso Hanford, CA, 15 February 1934]. Near fine. Typed recipient address on verso that of Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Unusual -- signed just shy of Cody's death on December 20, 1935. For the "Buffalo Bill" collector who has everything.
