Sobre este artículo
New York: Scribner, 1885. vi,[2],180,[4]pp. First edition. Maroon cloth. Portrait frontis. Cloth slightly soiled and slight spine roll; a very good copy.
Scarce first edition. One of 1500 copies printed. Noted work by this New Orleans native, discussing the "Negro Problem" and especially critical of the Southern penal system.
"He was a zealous advocate with pen and voice of changed election laws, of reform in prison administration, of abolition of the contract labor system, and of justice for the negro. His outspoken views, especially in the series of papers later collected under the title The Silent South (1885), aroused the resentment of his native region against him. " (DAB)
