Children delight in finding out how and why things work: they pull things apart, put them back together and then pull them apart again. Children love stories beginning, "Once upon a time....." Children like to sing and chant short tuneful songs with strong rhythms and repeated refrains. FOLK SONG ANALYSIS BUILDS ON ALL OF THESE. A teacher with limited musical expertise can still work with students to analyze Canadian folk songs. At a very basic level a class can: learn new songs in different ways: one by rote; one by note-reading; a third by so-fa syllables; find out how many notes are used in a song; which notes are highest and lowest; which are the beginning and ending notes; and become aware of how many lines of the music repeat (exactly or with changes); find out where the natural pausing places are (the cadences); and from both of these determine the form. HOW MUCH OF THE SUGGESTED ANALYSIS MUST BE DONE? Do as much as you and your students feel you can handle comfortably. Analysis is like working on a puzzle - yo see patterns emerging and learn how it all fits together When you finish one puzzle you look for another, perhaps more difficult, to intrigue you. Analyzing well-known songs will freshen your perception of them. It's also a stimulating way to learn new song Performance and music-reading skills grow rapidly, an added bonus.
