Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1963. First Edition [1 of 1,000 copies] (Cohen B177). Hardcover. Very Good. 2 1⁄4 x 1 1⁄4 inches (30 pages). This is a very good copy of the scarce and beautifully produced limited edition miniature book published to commemorate Winston Churchill’s honorary U.S. citizenship bestowed by President John F. Kennedy on April 9, 1963. The texts of the Act by Congress designating Churchill an Honorary Citizen of the U.S.; President Kennedy’s remarks on the occasion; the Presidential Proclamation and Churchill’s letter to the President in response are reproduced in full. The book measures 2 1⁄4 x 1 1⁄4 inches and is one of 1,000 copies leatherbound in full crimson crushed morocco, all edges gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. ACHILLE J. ST. ONGE (1913–1978) was the greatest maker of miniature books in the 20th Century. Based in Worcester, Massachusetts, he began producing them as a hobby in 1935. By the time he ceased in 1977, St. Onge had created 48 miniature masterpieces on an eclectic variety of subjects. The books all remain much-prized by collectors.
