Publisher's original light brown cloth with gilt illustration and titles to the upper board and spine. With a tissue guarded frontispiece and 27 further illustrations throughout the text. Three maps, one folding. A very good copy, the binding firm with some bumping at the corners and tips of the somewhat toned and slightly rolled spine. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Bennet Burleigh, was hired in 1881 by the London Telegraph to cover the war in Sudan. He was a correspondent for the Central News Agency during the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 and was the first to report the failure of the Gordon relief expedition, which led to the slaughter of the Khartoum garrison. He also covered the Boer War and the Russo-Japanese War, writing several books on his conflict reporting experiences. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
