Wakefield was a young doctor's wife and mother of 2 small children when she was caught up in the 1862 Dakota War, she published her unusual account of the war and her captivity shortly after the hanging of 38 Dakotas accused of paticipation in the "Sioux uprising." This is the first fully annotated and modern edition of Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees describing the historical and ethnographic background of Dakota-white relations in Minnesota and place Wakefield's narrative in the context of other captivity narratives and further explores Wakefield's unusual choices and moral stance in the midst of racial hatred.
