Publisher's presentation gift binding of full black morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (hinges tender, light wear to joints and extremities). First edition of the first book both written and illustrated by Darley. With a fine provenance: inscribed to George Bird Grinnell (1849-1938), future western historian, conservationist, and naturalist, and editor of Field and Stream, from his grandparents as a New Years gift when he was nineteen years old and a junior at Yale, 1 January 1869.
