1843 INDIANS 1ed History of Backwoods Ohio Shawnee French Indian War Frontier
"One of the best compilations of frontier narratives!" (Howes)
A.W. Patterson's "History of the Backwoods" is a rare, 19th-century account of frontier life in the American west. This book covers some of the earliest settlements in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Though, perhaps the best resource this book offers is the numerous accounts of interactions with Native American Indian tribes – tribes including the Massawomees, the Allegawe, Delawares, and Shawnees. Patterson also covers major battles in the French and Indian War.
Thomson says of this work:
"a rare book of Western History…a perfectly reliable narrative of events in the West arranged chronologically from the earliest discoveries of the French to Wayne's victory."

A rare first edition of John Charles Fremont's explorations and voyages. Printed shortly after the expedition itself, this account of exploration includes Fremont's expeditions took him to California, along the Oregon Trail, and through Nevada, where he encountered and battled Native American Indians.
According to Kurutz, this work is "one of the monumental works of western exploration!" Issued in both 'House [of Representatives]' and 'Senate' issues, this 1845 first edition is illustrated with 24 full-page engravings of mountain views, maps of the route, view of Pyramid Lake in Nevada, Columbia River Gorge views, waterfalls, the Sierra Nevada, the Great Salt Lake, and much more! This book changed the perspective of the American West, as it provided details of physical terrain and landmarks that had never been reported on through the mid-1800s.

1810 Neurology 1ed Brain Anatomy Spurzheim & Gall Physiognomy Phrenology FOLIO

Johann Spurzheim was a notable Germany physician who was one of the most prestigious 19th-century doctors, along with Franz Gall, to endorse phrenology as a science. Gall and Spurzheim
"invented and advanced the 'science' of phrenology, a concept holding that the moral, sexual, and intellectual traits of an individual are linked to corresponding protuberances of the brain which in turn manifest themselves as lumps on the skull." (HoH 792)
Spurzheim, a native German speaker, produced several works on phrenology and physiognomical systems, in which he explored his theories on the human brain.

This enormous folio of "Anatomy of the Nervous System" is illustrated with 17 engravings of human anatomy and views of the brain and nervous system.
