Epsicopal clergyman Ross Calvin (1889 - 1970) went to New Mexico in 1927; a six-month visit for health reasons extended to 43 years! As he considered man's history in the arid Southwest and the adaptability of desert plant and wild life particularly during drought, "the influence of the Sky Powers" became increasingly apparent. Calvin saw clearly, "... that which man determines here has never at any time very completely repealed that which Sky Determines". This perspective gave rise to the title of this classic work which demonstrates the powerful role of climatic matters in the development of both natural and cultural patterns of New Mexico.
