Circa [1880s]., [1880s].. Good. . - A slip of cream-colored paper, 1-5/8 inches high by 3-1/2 inches wide, is inscribed and signed "Yours sincerely / Mary Mapes Dodge". The paper is unevenly cut with some darkening and is mounted on a slightly larger piece of tan stiff paper. Remnants of paper & tape adhere to the verso of the mount where it has been removed from an album. Good. Mary Mapes Dodge [1831-1905] was an American children's author and editor, best known for her novel "Hans Brinker; or, The Silver Skates: A Story of Life in Holland" (1865). The novel introduced the sport of Dutch speed skating to Americans, and is also notable for popularizing the story of the little Dutch boy who plugs a dike with his finger. Mapes was a recognized leader in juvenile literature in the second half of the nineteenth century.
