Bound in modern full speckled calf, gilt title to spine, new endpapers. Ink library stamp to title page, bookplate to first pastedown (Walter Goldwater. Mr. Goldwater American Bookseller was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and had a collection of early printed books, mostly from the 15th century(?), apart from a little pale foxing, mostly to margins otherwise a very clean copy. After the first page the book opens with a short description of the ancient world, then with short chapters on many countries, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, plus natural history, curiosities and precious stones, the greater part is taken from Pliny"s Natural History and the geography of Pomponius Mela. There is a meagre addition about the British Isles which gives us Tanatus (Thanet): the stone jet, found abundantly in Britain, and remarks on the absence of snakes in Ireland.
