Sobre este artículo

Shanghai.: Kwang Hsueh Publishing House. fifth impression.. (circa1931).. English translations by Mrs. W.A. Young. Unpaginated, [60]pp, musical notation with lyrics in English and Chinese. Attractively bound bright blue cloth, pictorial upper cover stamped in silver 26.5 x 19.5cm. An attractive copy. An interesting bilingual collection of Chinese songs. The compiler has selected some of the pieces from Chinese music books but as his desire was to give exposure to a selection of old popular songs, which had not been previously published he went to temples, street-singers and "country folks" to collect the material. Though relatively well known songs he encountered difficulties as no two songs were sung in the same way so he opted to record the version that most appealed to him.

During his research for this collection he also realised that there is "a distinct lack of songs which can be used as patriotic songs suitable for group singing and so in this volume new words have been adapted to the original airs... It is to be hoped that others will follow this lead." He also took "a second liberty" and rearranged a Christian hymn to a Buddhist chant" believing that the Christian community in China would benefit from more familiar old melodies being used in church services. .
