[San Francisco]: [The Grabhorn Press], 1928. Limited Edition. No binding. Near fine. One of 200 copies printed, unnumbered, folio size, [1] p. In true Grabhorn style with their mid-western dry wit, "The Members of the Grabhorn Press" (i.e., Edwin and Robert) lament that the "critics" have taken over the discernment of what constitutes a beautiful book. "The critics are functioning furiously. New books are being subjected to grave and scientific critical analysis. They are being condemned or praised according to the percentage of beauty remaining in the retort at the end of the process....And we, as printers, not artists, register a mild protest".

The illustrated headpiece is, according to a note pencilled on the last page (and with which we heartily agree), mistakenly attributed in the Grabhorn Bibliography to Valenti Angelo. Per the note, the typographic illustration was composed by Robert Grabhorn.

Scarce in the marketplace and with no auction records, although OCLC locates approximately a dozen libraries with holdings.

___DESCRIPTION: Broadside with a typographic illustration serving as headpiece followed by a short treatise on "printing...being lifted out of its craft-class into the higher level of art" set forth in four short paragraphs, signed by "The Members of the Grabhorn Press", a single sheet folded into four pages but with all printing only on the front, the rear with a small stamp in the lower right-hand corner showing prior ownership by the BCC; Janson type, handset, on machine-made paper, folio size (13" by 8 78"), [1] printed page.

___CONDITION: Near fine, with very light age-toning, clean overall with a single light smudge in the top margin, and a few very shallow creases; other than the BCC stamp mentioned above and the pencilled note (all on the last [blank] page), free of other markings.

___CITATION: Grabhorn Bibliography, no. 114.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
