The first edition of this work, no. 94 of 1000 copies printed in the first edition.Set in an unnamed Caribbean republic, a socially ambitious black family move from their rural home to the capital, with the novel following their attempt to enter 'society'. The work was especially successful in America, where it was renamed 'Prancing Nigger' at the suggestion of the publisher.The work of innovative British novelist Ronald Firbank. Significantly inspired by Oscar Wilde, Firbank's novels consisted largely of dialogue, with references to religion, social-climbing, and sexuality.With the former owner's inscription of Diana Anderson, 1932 to verso of front free endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with light mark to front board. Former owner's inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot. Very Good

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
