A interesting piece of travel writing from the late 19th century. Offering a history on the founding of Australia, its railways, laws, local government, immigration, education, industry and much more. Unfortunately this work is missing numerous plates throughout, which appear to be the illustrative maps. Most likely removed by a previous owner. Despite this the work is still an interesting work of Australian history. Numerous illustrated plates remain, with a folding plate towards the rear of the volume. 34 plates missing in total. The work was edited by the Congregational minister William Harcus. Emigrating to Australia in 1860, he turned his hand to journalism and was appointed the lead writer for South Australian Register.
