Among the 17 chapters you find observations on the people of various sects – Hindu and Muslim; fairs and festivals; religion; devils, devil dancing, and devil doctors; village schools, temples and amusements; flora, etc. The book ends with 2 chapters on Mysore and Seringapatam, and the Canarese. This book has 50 water colour paintings that illustrate the subject of the accompanying chapters, painted by Lady Lawley. Folded sketch map creased in back of the volume.
This first edition ( 1914), is illustrated by Lady Lawley who was the wife of the Governor of Madras and who lived in Southern India for over six years and had close ties with the Maharajah of Mysore. It is said Lady Lawley's landscapes have a bright and almost impressionistic quality. Critics said she truly excelled with her portraits, which display beautifully the richness of Indian fabrics and jewelry in vivid detail.
