"Watkins Glen Reservation"
"It is now renowned the world over for its wonderful scenery, differing and all its characteristics from any other of the remarkable exhibitions of nature's capabilities, and has as distinct an individuality as the Falls of Niagara, the Mammoth Cave, the Natural Bridge of Virginia, or the Yosemite Valley … This great natural wander is located adjacent to the head of Seneca lake, known far and wide as the gem of all the Finger Lakes of New York State, in the outskirts of the village of Watkins, a short walk from the steamboat landing and stations of the Northern Central Railroad, crossed at a dizzy elevation of the Pennsylvania division of the New York Central and Hudson Railroad and directly contiguous to the Glen Route Trolley from Watkins to Elmira. The park comprises in its boundaries over 100 acres, its general course running in a narrow strip from east to west, its torturous length well towards two miles; and the total ascent to the summit at about seven hundred feet above the level of Seneca Lake …" ~Excerpted from the first page.
