Two volumes, thick octavo, pp (14), 1682, 64, (i), slight age-toning but otherwise remarkably clean and tight internally, full polished calf (probably contemporary), a little scuffed and bumped, spines a little creased with slight wear and pulling at the head and foot, raised bands to the spine with green leather labels, with the bookplate of Kenneth Lazenby, an early founder of the Alpine Garden Society. Overall a remarkably good set. [This the third edition of the Species Plantarum; the first edition of 1753 was the first botanical work to consistently apply the binomial nomenclature system of naming to any large group of organisms. Because it is the first work in which binomial nomenclature was consistently applied, Species Plantarum was chosen as the "starting point" for the nomenclature of most plants (the nomenclature of some non-vascular plants and all fungi uses later starting points).
